Potential new post-laser refractive surgery complication identified

A new syndrome characterized by noninflammatory corneal opacification can occur in some patients within 9 days after undergoing LASIK or PRK, according to a study. The opacification gradually clears over several months and can also cause a possible hyperopic shift in refraction, the study authors said.

Baris Sonmez, MD, and Robert K. Maloney, MD, identified 23 eyes of 14 patients with the syndrome, which they termed central toxic keratopathy. Four eyes had undergone PRK and 19 eyes had undergone LASIK.

In all cases, eyes developed central corneal opacification in the laser-treated area 3 to 9 days after surgery, which persisted for 2 to 18 months, the authors reported. Eighteen of the 19 LASIK-treated eyes developed diffuse lamellar keratitis before the onset of the opacification, they noted.

Charenton-le-Pont, France (March 29, 2007) - Essilor, the world leader in ophthalmic optics, has announced that it would like to deploy an action plan comprising a number of measures designed to increase daily trading volumes and thereby widen the market for the company's stock.

In addition, on March 20, the Board of Directors decided to ask shareholders at the May 11 Annual Meeting to approve a two-for-one stock split. If approved, the split will be carried out in July and will make the share more affordable.

Ontario receives $205 million for cataract surgery wait-time guarantee

TORONTO (CP) - Ontario will try to get cataract patients surgery within six months after the province got a cheque for $205 million from Ottawa to shorten wait times Tuesday.

The cash, which was included in last week's federal budget, means all cataract patients are guaranteed a shorter wait for surgery starting in January 2009.

In the meantime, Health Minister George Smitherman said the province will try to ensure cataract patients don't wait longer than six months - even if it means sending them to a hospital across the province to get the procedure.

"Today we make a big step forward," Smitherman said as the funding was announced at Toronto East General Hospital.

"This is a big step for public health care. We're grateful for the chance to demonstrate progress to the people."

Cataract surgery has already been identified by the province as one of six key procedures that gets priority and extra funding.

PROGRESS 2007: Fisher-Titus marks 50 years of healing in Norwalk

As the second largest employer in the city of Norwalk, few other businesses in the area have grown and thrived over the years like Fisher-Titus Medical Center.

According to officials, the development of the hospital began in 1911 when Norwalk's City Hospital Association received its articles of incorporation from the state. That led to the opening of Norwalk Memorial Hospital in 1916.

As the city's first official hospital, Norwalk Memorial was a 38-bed facility at 269 Main St. and was funded by subscription donations from community residents in and around Norwalk.

The vision of the Fisher-Titus as we know it today began in 1954 when the Fisher family of Norwalk supported the development of an independent hospital.

William and Laura Titus-Fisher issued the formerly named Norwalk Memorial Hospital with what they called a "challenge donation" and with that, the hospital's board of directors began a fundraising campaign to add a new wing, one of many expansions Fisher-Titus would endure over the years.
